About
Actively appraising textiles since 1997; general personal property appraising since approx.. 2005-6. Professional quilt restoration and repair since 1994. Continuing education in various aspects of history, styles and techniques for quilts, coverlets, clothing, crochet, tatted and knitted fiber items, and other related textiles; general antiques and collectibles, including furniture, ceramics and glassware, decorative arts items, household and use items, general appraising methods, etc.
Certified textile appraiser by the American Quilter's Society (1999). Recertification up to date (2023)
USPAP 15-hour class and exam successfully completed in 2011; 7-hour class successfully completed in 2022. (sixth time completed, complying with ongoing USPAP requirements.)
Member, senior personal property appraising, American Society of Appraisers (ASA).
M.A., English language and literature, University of Michigan. Author of eight books on needlework and cultural history, and hundreds of articles published online and in print on antiques & vintage pieces, crafts and personal finance, as well as a wide variety of subjects. Edited books for several authors, including Ami Simms and Shelly Burge.
Author of quilt-related entries for Encyclopaedia Britannica.
Columnist for McCall's Vintage Quilts (Old Things Considered); past contributing and managing editor for Crazy Quilt Society, National Quilting Association's Quilting Quarterly, the Quilts & Other Comforts wholesale department (QuiltShopTalk), and the Quilts & Other Comforts Fabric Club. Editorial at Quilter's Newsletter –four years.
Consultant for three television specials; appeared in person on one, Quilts: Threads of America's Heritage. (High Noon Productions) Also on Simply Quilts to promote Hanky Panky book, The Quilt Show for Crazy quilts, and Quilter's Newsletter's Quilters TV cable channel for Memory Quilts.
National lecturer and teacher, focusing on quilting, antiques/vintage pieces and textile history. Assignments have included the AQS Paducah conference; International Quilt Market; Crazy Quilt Society; Quilt Restoration Society; MPMA annual conference (museums); Quilter's Gathering; as well as other conferences, state and local guilds and quilt shops across the United States.

National judge for a variety of competitions, including Pacific International and Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festivals (Mancuso Brothers) and the International Quilt Festival (Quilts, Inc . – Houston).
